Insulating Switches and Outlets: Keep Air from Entering the Home
Did you know insulating switches and outlets can help you save money?
Insulating switches and outlets in the home can make a huge difference in your energy bill. Believe it or not air can always find a way into your home and out of your home too. For example, if your home is drafty you probably dismiss it as part of the home or normal. Most homes are drafty, but they don’t have to be. In this edition of McCauley Electric’s blog we will teach you how to insulate your home switches and outlets.
Have you ever touched a light switch and it felt cold? Or perhaps you have walked by an outlet and felt a slight cool breeze – just a little bit? That is actually an issue with your home’s insulation. Most home owners think insulation is strictly for the attic. WRONG! Your entire home should be insulated: attic, crawl space or basement and yes – the walls too. At McCauley Electric we know all too well where homeowners lose money each month due to overlooked issues that minor changes can fix. Let’s how you can save money by insulating switches and outlets in your home.
All you need is a screwdriver and some foam plate seals. Start by turning off the power to the area you are working on. You don’t want to feel a shock. Next take off the light switch plate. Look at the switch or outlet to see if there is space around the perimeter. This is where the air is coming in from the outside. Cold air comes in the winter and hot air in the summer causing your bill to fluctuate. You can fill this unnecessary gap with insulating caulk or expanding foam. Take the foam plate and place it over the switch or outlet, making sure it is properly placed and there is no room for air to escape. Once everything is secure, put the light switch or outlet plate back and screw it in tightly. For some extra assurance you can use safety plugs in outlets to keep air out.
So there you have it. Seems simple enough, right. If not, you can always call on McCauley Electrical Service to insulate the light switches and outlets in your home.
