The sweltering days of summer are finally behind us, and the cooler fall weather should provide some savings on your electricity bill. In this article, we’ll share some ways to save even more money with minimal investment.
Programmable Thermostat
The one investment I recommend that will more than pay for itself in the coming years is a programmable thermostat. Programmable thermostats are great because you can program your homes temperature during certain times of the day. For example, if you work 8-5 you can program it to raise your home temperature 2-3 degrees during that part of the day. At 5 PM, when you are set to return from work it will lower the temp back to your desired setting. The Nest Thermostat is very popular and allows you to control your home temp and other electrical items remotely via an app.
Convert to LED Bulbs
While the initial investment is greater than incandescent bulbs, the overall return on investment is much greater with LED Bulbs. For example, See the cost savings of using 45 LED Bulbs vs regular incandescent bulbs in a household for a year. Pretty Incredible.
Lower the temperature on your water heater
Your home’s water heater is one of the biggest power drains in your home. Many are set to run at 140 degrees. Find out what temperature it is currently set to and lower it to 120 Degrees. In addition, purchase and install insulation for your hot water heater and reduce them temp even further or power it off when on vacation.
Shut off Heated Dry on your dishwasher
The heated dry feature is another source of power drain and responsible for a good portion of the electricity consumed by your dishwasher.
Wash your clothes in cold water
Yes, I know what you may be thinking. But according to consumer reports today’s higher quality detergents make cleaning in cold water very effective. You should still use a warm water when washing heavier stains, diapers, bed sheets, and towels.
We hope this article gives you some ideas for saving money on your electric bill. And don’t forget to turn out the lights!
